Proficiency Exams

Proficiency exams allow students who feel they have already mastered course material to demonstrate comprehensive knowledge in a particular course. Students who pass proficiency exams will receive credit for the appropriate course(s). Students cannot complete proficiency exams for courses in which they have previously been enrolled at DeVry. Courses for which proficiency credit is allowed are not included in the GPA.

Proficiency exams cost $5 per credit hour of the course being tested. Applications for proficiency exams can be obtained from the Test Administrator in the Academics Office (Room 2200) and must be approved by the appropriate program Dean.

Testing for continuing students is only done during weeks three through eleven of the term. All applications for testing must be received by Friday of week 10 of the standard term. If changes to B Session courses in the current term is desired as a result of testing the proficiency exam must be completed by Friday of the third week before the start of the session.

Testing for new students is done during week one for courses in that term only. New students may also test during weeks three through eleven for courses needed in later terms.
